Task 3 Practice Art

Art creates empathy through its stories. Every art piece, visual or not, has some kind of story behind it which helps those consuming it learn more about themselves and others and in turn, become more empathetic.

Squid Game was a popular television show that followed a group of people who have been wronged by capitalism through a punishing life or death struggle that no one should have to go through. This show puts you into the place of struggle with its characters and as it makes you care for them, it teaches you to empathize with those less fortunate to the horrors of capitalism.

Another good story of empathy in art, is a game from 2015 called UNDERTALE. It takes the classic rpg format of defeating your enemies through combat, and flips it on its head. Every kill has a consequence, and removing characters from the game entirely changes the story. Playing the game by talking with your opponents teaches you that not every event must be solved through violence and once you get to know them, you can empathize with the monsters, because they are not much different than us.

A final example is the famous painting, Starry Night. This painting is a beautiful perspective of the night sky from artist Vincent Van Goh. It has no figures and has no text, but is a painting of something so real, painted with real emotion, that observing it on an analytical level can tell you how Van Goh feels.

Some people might say that art does not create empathy due to a lack of humanity. Art is not alive and cannot be related to. But I would argue that when people create art, they display a part of themselves in it, on display for all to view, in hopes they will understand.

this is bad
