Passage: Colossians 4

(H) Highlight

  • Colossians 4:5-6
  • [5] Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time.
  • [6] Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.

(E) Explain

  • Paul always encouraging and instructing … present yourselves well to outsiders. Time is short and we don’t have time to mess around. Be ready to give proper and good answers to those to ask about your faith in Jesus or have honest questions about God and the Bible and Jesus. Be wise. Don’t be a jerk. Speak truth but in grace. Be ready.

(A) Apply

  • I need to be wise, to be ready, to be intensional in sharing my be beliefs, my world view, my love for Jesus. “making the best use of time” … could mean, “get after it”, or “be wise, don’t waste your time”, not sure. Either way, be gracious and yet don’t compromise truth. Also, everyone may be different. Be mindful of this as well.
  • Commentary: Col. 4:5–6 seasoned with salt. Compare Matt. 5:13. The metaphor suggests giving a powerful and attractive testimony to non-Christians.

(R) Respond

  • Lord, please may I be confident in You and wise toward outsiders. May I be gracious in my conversations and yet truthful. May I be ready to proclaim and stand for You.
