Passage: Philippians 1

(H) Highlight

  • [14] And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.
  • [21] For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

(E) Explain

  • Other believers that Paul has known have become much more confident and bold in Jesus by Paul's imprisonment ... they have become encouraged by Paul standing strong and enduring whatever would come his way. He loves Jesus and nothing will get in the way of that. This has caused them to be bold in their speech and proclamation of the gospel!
  • Life ... to live is all about Christ ... to die is gain - Heaven awaits. No worries. There is no fear in the present, as we have great hope in the eternal.

(A) Apply

  • I'm amazed at Paul and those who take encouragement from him and turn it into boldness, confidence, fearlessness ... oh that this would be of me. I must admit, I'm nervous of what is to come ... persecution, imprisonment, the need to overcome and endure, and boldly preach the Word.
  • Luke 21:14โ€“15 says ...  [ Settle it therefore in your minds not to meditate beforehand how to answer, for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. ]  So, therefore I must rest in this promise and hold fast to my first love, to my Savior, and remain faithful.

(R) Respond

  • Oh, Lord. Help me rest in Your promises. Prepare me to be bold and to have the confidence of Paul and those who were encouraged by him to boldly speak the Word without fear. For to me to live is CHRIST!
