Passage: Philippians 2
(H) Highlight
- [8] And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
(E) Explain
- Jesus became flesh, human form. In order to do this he had to humble himself, as he is the Son of God, dwelling in glory. This humility also drove his obedience to the cross, taking on the sins of the world in his death. This isn't just a doctrinal verse, but it describes what deep humility looks like as we love others. In verses 1-5 Paul is calling the Philippians, and therefore us, to put others first. Christ is our example.
(A) Apply
- It may be quite simple, but it really popped out to me this time that Paul is laying out Christ as our example ... to the previous 1-5 verses on how to love each other. May I 'have the same mind' as Christ. May I look to him as my example in loving others and everything else for that matter. May I be sensitive to areas of improvement in putting others first.
(R) Respond
- Oh Lord, may I look to you as my example in loving others. Please, Lord, show me where to love at home, at work, at church, and in our community. Amen.
Other Thoughts
- v.8, and so many others!
- Commentary: Phil. 2:5–11 - This passage is often referred to as the “hymn of Christ.” Paul describes Christ’s example of service in a poem that traces his preexistence, incarnation, death, resurrection, and ascension to the right hand of God. Paul wrote this magnificent hymn to encourage the Philippians to consider other people’s interests first (see v. 4).
- Philippians 2:1–5
- Christ’s Example of Humility
- [1] So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, [2] complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. [3] Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. [4] Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. [5] Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,
