Passage: Philippians 3

(H) Highlight

  • [20] But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,

(E) Explain

  • After a section on 'righteousness through faith in Christ', Paul switches gears a bit and discusses 'straining towards the goal'. Paul is reminding us in this later verse whose we are and of our ultimate identity.  We are citizens of Heaven. We are children of God and we await the promise of our returning Savior, Jesus.

(A) Apply

  • When I am in the battle, when I am straining and striving, when we are all in the trenches, we must take heart and remember these two truths ... 1) I am His child and a citizen of Heaven and 2) our Savior will ultimately bring us home. These truths must provide hope and encouragement, looking forward to all being made new and right and fully good.

(R) Respond

  • Lord, fill my heart with these truths to be an encouragement to my soul. May they also be top-of-mind to encourage others! Amen

Other Thoughts

  • v.20 ... oh, and almost this entire chapter, LOL.
