230423 - Muslim and Mumin

There is a distinction between Muslims and Mumins. Or | Submitters? and Believers.

God distinguishes between them in 33:35.

[33:35] Surely, the submitting males, and the submitting females, the believing males, and the believing females, the devout males, and the devout females, the truthful males, and the truthful females, the patient males, and the patient females, the humble males, and the humble females, the charitable males, and the charitable females, the fasting males, and the fasting females, the males who maintain their chastity, and the females who maintain, and the males who commemorate God frequently, and the females who commemorate; God has prepared for them a forgiveness and a great recompense.

Do Believers have to be Muslims?

[3:102] O you who believe, reverence God as He deserves to be reverenced, and do not die except as ones who have submitted.

Shamimur, Anan and Mohammad Sharoroor (scholar) claim that believers don't necessarily have to be muslims based on this ayat.

Muslims

At a minimum, Muslims are those who

[3:64] Say: "O people of the Book, let us come to a mutual understanding between us and between you; that

• we serve none except God, and
• that we do not set up anything with Him, and
• that none of us takes each other as patrons besides God."

If they turn away, then say: "Bear witness that we have submitted."

Note, in the ayat above, there is no need to believe in the messenger and the Quran per se. It's just pure monotheism.

Mumins are

[49:14] The Nomads said: "We believe." Say: "You have not believed; but you should say: 'We have submitted;' until belief enters into your hearts." And if you obey God and His messenger, He will not put any of your works to waste. God is Forgiver, Merciful.

[49:15] Believers are those who believe in God and His messenger, then they became without doubt, and they strive with their money and their lives in the cause of God. These are the truthful ones.

And see

[9:111] God has purchased from the believers their very lives and their wealth, that they will have Paradise; they fight in the cause of God-so they kill and are killed-a promise that is true upon Him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Qur'an. And whoever fulfills this pledge with God, then have good news of the pledge which you are concluded with. Such is the great triumph.

• The repenters (the returning),
• the servers,
• the appreciative,
• the activists,
• the kneeling,
• the prostrating,
• the advocates for good and
• the prohibiters of vice, and
• the adherents to God's boundaries

and give good news to the believers.

Believers believe in God and His messenger, and it also seems like they strive in the way of God.

One more ayat in support of Believers and striving...

[8:74] And those who have believed and emigrated and strived in the cause of God, and those who have sheltered and supported, these are truly the believers. They will have a forgiveness and a generous provision.

Additional Verses We Discussed

[2:132] And Abram enjoined his sons and Jacob: "O my sons, God has selected the system for you, so do not die except as ones who have submitted."

Brother Shamimur brought up the ayat above to demonstrate that being a Muslim does not necessitate the believe in a messenger.

In response I brought up the ayat about Moses being the first to "believe". The rebuttal to Shamimur being Moses is claiming to be a believer.

[7:143] So when Moses came to Our designated time, and his Lord spoke to him, he said: "My Lord, let me look upon you." He said: "You will not see Me, but look upon the mountain, if it stays in its place then you will see Me." So when his Lord revealed Himself to the mountain, He caused it to crumble; thus Moses fell unconscious. When he awoke, he said: "Glory to You, I repent to You and I am the first of those who believe."

Shamimur also brought up the following ayat to demonstrate that the definition of Muslim is just pure monotheism.

[10:90] And We helped the Children of Israel cross the sea, and Pharaoh and his soldiers followed them out of hatred and animosity. But when he was certain to drown, he said: "I believe that there is no god except the One in whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am of those who have submitted."

At the start of the discussion somewhere we discussed

[2:62] Surely those who believe; and those who are Jewish, and the Nazarenes (the Helpers), and the Sabians, whoever of them believes in God and the Last Day and does good works; they will have their recompense with their Lord, and there is no fear upon them, nor will they grieve.

[5:69] Surely those who believe, and those who are Jewish, and the Sabians, and the Nazarenes (the Helpers), whoever of them believes in God and the Last Day and does good works; then they will have nothing to fear nor will they grieve.
