Election Update

2022 Election Update

The good. On Tuesday a three-judge panel (2 Republicans, 1 Democrat) unanimously rejected a lawsuit from leftist organizations challenging the election maps created by the North Carolina legislature this fall and ordered elections to move forward. They ordered that candidate registrations resume at 8:00 A.M. on Thursday, February 24, 2022 and continue through and end at 12:00 noon on Friday, March 4, 2022.

The bad. The same leftist organizations are expected to challenge this ruling at the North Carolina Supreme Court, where there is a 4-3 Dem-Rep advantage. There are four possible outcomes:

  1. Uphold the lower court ruling and let the elections move forward.
  2. Order the Legislature to redraw the maps.
  3. Appoint a special master and draw their own maps and force them on the state.
  4. Accept the maps that the Left's lawsuit has submitted instead of the Legislature's maps.

I am not confident the Supreme Court will do the right thing and accept the legally-constructed maps. North Carolina law says the state legislature is the final authority on redistricting maps; however, we all expect the Left to 'sue until we're Blue' and this is just another example of that.

Voter ID

The Left's challenge to the voter-approved Voter ID Amendment to the NC Constitution is now before the North Carolina Supreme Court. Just like other actions, I am not confident the Supreme Court will support the will of the people. Hopefully they will prove me wrong.

Candidates

From time to time the Chatham County Republican Party will announce events by Republican candidates. This in no way indicates an endorsement of any particular candidate until after the primary elections are concluded.

Calendar Updates

  • February 10, 7pm forum. The League of Women Voters is holding a 'virtual forum' on elections along with the administrative staff of the Chatham Board of Elections. I strongly suggest you attend this if possible, as the LWV has at times in the past seemed to stray from their non-partisan public face. Register at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeNib_dy9cKCubSc6CXniY4wZ4iXjoAVwkBN2YOAr-FXfbC7w/viewform.
  • February 24 - March 4. Candidate registration. Maybe.
  • March 26, 9am. Chatham County GOP Convention at the Pittsboro Community House. We will have a keynote speaker and presentations by Republican candidates running for election in 2022. All county Republicans are invited, but if you wish to be a voting delegate at the convention you must be a registered Republican no later than January 31, 2022. We will have a website for registration available in the next few weeks, but put this on your calendar now.

Chatham Republican Men's Club

The Men's Club is becoming a reality! Expect to see the charter meeting sometime in the next few weeks. Hope to see you there, more information to follow.

In National News ...

Senator Chuck Schumer and his Democrat Senate colleagues are focused on a federal take over of state elections. President Biden gave an incredibly divisive speech in Atlanta, but Senator McConnell presented a great rebuttal. You can see it here.

Finally, from 1918:

The American's Creed

I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed, a democracy in a republic, a sovereign Nation of many sovereign States; a perfect union, one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.

I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it, to support its Constitution, to obey its laws, to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies.

–Accepted by the United States House of Representatives on April 3, 1918.
