Work from Next Door | Tu 11/22

I woke up to get ready to go into the office, but realized that I would leave too late to log in at a desk in time for stand-up, so I went to Union to be ready for the meeting telling myself that I'd leave for the office right after. It's too bad subsequent meetings were back to back with it, which didn't leave me a window to drive over.

The meetings ended at noon, by which point I figured I might as well stay remote for the day, so dressed up and with packed lunch in hand I drove the 2 minutes it takes to go home feeling like a chump. Later I met with Nicole to pair program, but we got stuck trying to set up the project, which made me question why I even got hired. The experience did make me hear echoes of developers on Reddit advising juniors to ask good questions and "do their homework" beforehand, which was a good reminder to stay humble and that my career is still in its infancy.

Later in typical form I laid on the couch and sent myself forward in time. That's a terrible habit, but I should probably also kick the habit of not sleeping at a normal time. Thankfully Gigi called me to wake me up right around 5 PM asking if I wanted to join her for dinner with Ben and Melissa, which I was willing to put off the gym for.

We ate in Richardson, but had the time to go to a Chinese grocery store nearby first, which was fun to look through and had good item selection with solid prices. That may be the stop if I need Asian grocery items from now on. Dinner itself was also great: we talked a lot about raves and volleyball in typical fashion, but also brought up travel plans and where we'll all be for the holiday season.

Dang was also supposed to come, but he showed up very late and the rest of us left him and Ben to chat while we got boba nearby. TP Tea's TieGuanYin latte is solid and I understand why Gigi likes it so much. Later we all came back to my place and I was happy to show them the upgraded condo after so many warnings not to see it out of embarrassment.

There we reminisced on past hijinks and rave stories, which was a fun look at the past. Ben and Melissa also talked about life in New York: living situation, friends, volleyball, and school. The update was fun to get, but made me realize how much life we lived separated now, which was a bit sad to see.

On the drive with Gigi she also asked me about how I'm doing with Samantha and what happened at Slander. It felt strange admitting that I'm a bit on edge with people nowadays and careful to find their flaws now, but that's certainly the case. I realized that I miss Samantha a lot more in abstract, mostly that I miss keeping each other warm, than her personally since I definitely see red flags in her behavior. Gigi was also not surprised to hear about what she did at Slander, saying that Samantha is the type of person to be with someone new often, which I understand now. I guess it's a bit sad that I'm one of those guys though.
