M23 feedback Serial essay June 2022
Dear G11HL students, Since we don't have any remaining HL classes this year, I thought I'd write up my general feedback here. The essays were read without knowledge of who wrote them (unless you wrote your name at the top). "Theory" (Conversation Theory, for example) is not "used" by a speaker when they speak. It is used by you, the person analysing their work, as a lens or framework to present your arguments in. About summary/paraphrasing: try to imagine an educated reader who has just finis...

G10 task 3 exemplars
Dear Grade 10 students, Here are some examples of your responses to the extra task 3 work done in class, with my feedback. 1 Good use of a real example (Chris) Greetings to all the members of the board. I am applying to present a talk about the importance of art for the upcoming youth conference, Titled "The role of art in developing empathy for people and groups who live lives that are different to your own". The subject that I would cover in this is how art can help develop empathy for p...

Mr. Carlier IO feedback final outline
Here are the points you need to pay attention to as you finalise your outline and extracts: Idea/concept Make sure the global issue is clearly and concisely worded The global issue should have a narrow enough focus (when, for example?) make sure you both introduce the texts and unpack the global issue in your introduction Analysis Reserve your (very) close reading work for the extracts You don't need to quote from the wider work/bow; paraphrasing is fine Structure I recommend using yo...

General feedback on Brave scene analysis (June 2021)
Everyone had 1 hour and 15 minutes to write a guided textual analysis of the opening scene from the animated Disney film Brave. The extract given comprised four film stills and the related script extract. Individual comments were posted on ManageBac, with grades, and the responses themselves annotated. Here's some general feedback: -Just a note: I wrote "Stonehenge" on the board, because someone asked for the spelling, but this is a specific place in England, not Scotland. "Circle of stones" ...

General feedback Educated essays (Westover)
Here are some points of feedback on your Educated essays. Keep in mind that this task was closely related to the final HL Essay you will have to submit next year as your IB Coursework. -There was a good range of topics for exploration, mostly clearly defined and appropriately narrow in scope for the essay length -There was a fairly good understanding of the application of a theory (in this case psychoanalytical theory) as a lens or framework -Titles were often interesting and relevant, creating...

M22 English LLSLHL advice after mocks
Here are some thoughts to consider after the IO mock exam experience: -Your mock IO grade does not determine 45%(SL) or 25%(HL) of your IB Predicted Grade! -Most understood the nature of the task, which was to explore all four elements in a balanced way, with a focus on your Global Issue -Global Issues were generally well-defined. Don't use single words to define the Global Issue though -Use the IB outline document; don't change it -Extract lines need to be numbered and images captioned -Use no...

Educated responses - examples of good student writing
Here are some examples of interesting writing done by some of you on the memoir Educated. Your task was to take a psychological perspective on the events in the chapter "What We Whispered and What We Screamed" (ch. 22). This work was completed in February 2021. These are just some of the examples of good writing I had pointed out in class. Work not copied here was harder to illustrate in a single paragraph, because my comments there were about the overall argument (Sofia, Poppy, Guillaume). Go...
