Touching the Void - How emotion is conveyed through music and sound - Rushil Shah

In this scene, from 1:31:10 mins to 1:34:09, they used music and sound to convey his emotions. They did this by showing how using all of these sounds:

  • The wind: They had the sound of the wind in the background for a lot of the shot. They had this at a low pitch when voiceover Joe was talking.
  • Him breathing and whimpering: During this scene, we could hear Joe breathing and whimpering really loudly.
  • The rocks moving: They showed us Joe moving and squeezing the rocks around trying to fight the pain that he was going through
  • Him talking (voiceover which was loud and clear)
  • Loud sound effects: When Joe was losing his mind, they had added loud non-diegetic sounds. When they did that, they had it at a really high volume to show us how hard it was for him to try to focus and not lose his mind
  • Scary music and talking effect (echos): When Joe was muttering some word to himself, or when he was singing, he would do it in this scary talking effect. This effect was added after the shot was taken (so it was a non-diegetic sound). This was done to show us, the viewers, his mental state.
  • Metal hitting the rocks: When he was on the ground, trying to stay in one piece, we can hear his ice pickaxe hitting the stones. This shows us that he was trying to get back us and try to keep on moving.
  • Heart beating: His heart beating was also added in after the shot was taken but it was showing us what he was going through. This sound was helping us in feeling what Joe was feeling.
