At Hand

510

There's a fascinating easiness to choosing what is available, at hand, over something that's worthwhile, profound.

Sitting down and turning on Netflix is so easy. It's available, always. It gives us pleasure, always. Boom. Just do it and don't complain.

Sitting down and picking up a book is so hard. Even the incredibly simple action of picking up the book seems like a task that would require a huge effort. Complain and don't do it.

Being focused on the project you're working on is so easy. Just say "I'm busy!", and no one will touch you. Available, pleasurable.

Giving attention to someone who needs it, even while you're working on something, is hard. All you want do to is finish your thing and now they're interrupting you? Gosh.

Don't escape into the available, dive into the worthwhile.
