Nouns vs Verbs

Friday, 18 Aug 2023

I've been waiting for something while reading a book, a book that I've been waiting for the past few weeks. I'm a slow reader by the way. So one thing that struck me the most is the choice of words. I would say not really words, but the choice of using either a verb or a noun to strengthen your case. Verbs are bound by time, whereas nouns are usually not. So in a sense, if you want to explain something, it's a lot stronger if you use a noun to describe something rather than a verb. For example, if you want to say, "He's amazing," that is amazing as a noun, essentially an adjective, but it's not a verb. This would mean that the person is amazing almost all the time, without an end, timeless.

However, if we say, "He amazes me," that means that he only does the amazement at certain time points. This made me think that it's really quite interesting how these are subtle differences. When you read something, at least to me, I don't always notice why the author chooses a verb or a noun because I would understand them almost similarly. So yeah, that's something that interests me.
