Problems

A daily list of problems that I encounter in my life.

Problems - Sunday, April 19

Some people in Taiwan can't write good English but want to interact with that market. Grammar checker optimized for it? Like Grammarly but for this market and also less invasive. Copywriting, marketing, etc. Bluetooth fucking sucks. I constantly have to pair and unpair and forget device for my computer and phone, for both Airpods and QC. Huge waste of time, and happens all the time. Insane time waste. I want to watch cartoon in Chinese with subtitles. They are on the screen, but not as text so ...

Big institutions and newspapers are supposed to be credible, but often they are not. A lot of people listen to them, but they make predictions and recommendations that are false. Need time and uncertainty to identify. Reputation for accurate statements. OK to be wrong but then retract. Time=Uncertainty. Big one. Once I go online it is hard to go back offline again until end of work. Should be exception, not default. Im working but there’s construction noise that makes it hard for me to concentr...

Problems - Wednesday, April 8

Missed a few days. I wake up in middle of the night, 5-6am and can’t sleep. Read for an hour then go back. Sometimes longer. Disruptive. Then wake up too late. Why? Learning Chinese, I have a text that is using limited character set, and another that is using all kinds of vocabulary. I'd like to have a text that is targeted for B1 vocab level and learning required vocabulary in a consistent manner. Isolate characters that are easy vs ones that are rare. Sometimes I forget certain characters. e...

Problems - Sunday, April 5

When walking in some cities from point A to B it is very noisy and polluted, full of cars. I'd like to go from A to B just like I would do in a forest. My shoes and socks get due to their light and airy nature when it is raining. People I want to keep in contact with but effort to do so. No reminder in virtual environment. Some twitter arguments quite not engaging appropriately, like a DAG of arguments. Should be able to cut off way more arguments, assuming agreement on general principles and s...

I want to work offline, but I want to sync notes and flashcards between phone and laptop. Feels like a ceremony to sync. Same with books. I want to skim twitter but there's too much noise in my timeline, end up giving up after a bit. I want to quickly add stuff to research queue and read on my tablet offline, then take notes to follow up. Healthcare workers want to speak up about conditions but are worried about getting fired. Imagine if they had insurance? With Corona a lot of unemployed peopl...

Problems - Thursday, April 2

A lot of skilled people live where I live, but due to language barriers and market dynamics salaries are quite low. Arbitrage opportunity for working towards EU/US clients. In this climate and with sweat my skin often dries out and I get eczema. During a quarantine people want to meet like normal but not allowed to due to social distancing. Lack of E2EE video calls for non techies. Lawyers/accountants, confidential info. Signal and Wire exists. Information lacking? ...

For deep work, I want to be offline in airplane mode. This should be a simple switch, where I precommit to being offline, then can track this offline time. It takes 15m to get into some state of solid doing, when I can't do that due to being tired or so I want to spend that time knocking off random errands that are laid out for me, OR rest and be bored. Not be in a state of work but not really. For budgeting, it is somewhat annoying that I have to have two for YNAB - one for local currency and ...

Problems - Tuesday, March 31

I need long stretches of time, say 4h, for writing and hacking, but I often find myself with some commitments in just a few hours. Things just eat up time, before and after, despite there being 24 hours in a day. Due to waking up, morning routine, planning/inbox, then later in day class, etc. Links rot and change location. Would like to be notified of this, or have a hook where I can see dead links beforehand. Sometimes due to me changing something, someone else changing it, or something just ...

Wasting time with dependency management. I just want to run a Github static page locally, but I end up in a long maze of Jekyll/Ruby/lib dependency/configuration hell. Too many dimensions. I don't know what changes a command actually performs, and I can't roll back. I run some installation command that might work, but I don't know how this impacts my filesystem and what to do about it. A dependency tree where I can roll back to a previous, cleaner, point, would be useful. Like git. I spend too ...

Problems - Sunday, March 29

I dont want to look at my phone but yet I do. Especially social media and some news apps with variable random reward. How can I avoid this, but still reap some of the benefits? 80/20 Pareto. Big problem, especially when bringing phone everywhere. Addiction. I want to read classics and useful information that survives, yet bombarded with newness. How to make Lindy filter more embedded? Instead of having recency bias there should be some counterforce for old stuff. Research, etc. News. In your fa...
