The Choice of Hercules

Lucius Verus and Commodos were not too far from the average person. They were Roman emperors that were quite unremarkable. Both lived a life of shallow unsatisfying pleasures. Lucius was believed to have suffered from alcoholism, anxiety and depression. In contrast, it would have taken Marcus Aurelius a Herculean effort to live according to his values. He sought wisdom and virtue over joy and pleasure. He practiced moderation and kept his vices in check. To live like this for a lifetime can seem like suffering but suffering is not suffering if it is with purpose.
We must adjust our taste for doing things according to our values in order to live a satisfying life. Do not mistake simple pleasures of food, sex and entertainment for what will really bring meaning to life.

What could you do differently?
Try not to get injured at the gym. Lower back pain was definitely contributing to restlessness and brain fog.
