Day 060

#100Days

Narrowing down quantity and then quality

While talking to a friend today the topic of excess and abundance came out.
He said we live in an amazing world, in an amazing time, that one can have anything, access anything.

I agree, there is so much out there, so much abundance, wealth etc.

Unfortunately, it is not necessarily equally distribuited and accessible to everyone, but it is there.

That led me thinking about our choices, and our ability to choose stuff from the whole collection and variety of items.

Have you ever felt that you do so much in your day, and yet have a very small level of satisfaction. Or maybe a weak sense of fulfillment, or achievement?

That happens quite often to me. I do realize that I might have done a lot in by the end of the day. But I rarely feel a nice sense of accomplishment, that would make me feel glad, successful, or satisfied.

So I was wondering that the problem can be cause by the abundance. There is so much out there, so many options, that we end up losing ourselves in this big sea of content.

I'm not sure if that happens to you, but I am suspecting that it might be happening to me.

One thing I am currently doing to help myself, is to cut off the amount of topics of interest I dedicate time to. I'm focusing only on those topics in which I'm truly curious about. I eventually do simple scans through general topics, but I do not spend too much time on them. I'm also prioritizing time and dedicating to things that matter me most, like writting is at the moment.

The second level I consider to be quality. I'm not yet sure how to evaluate that. For instance, I like writing, and sometimes I am not writting things with the highest quality I can. Sometimes I'm not motivated enough to dedicate good quality effort to writting.
Sometimes the tasks of a day accumulate, and there's less time available. Many elements combine to form the outcome of a day, and they all influence the result. I'm not in control of all the elements and the events that affect 'my plans' for a day.

So maybe quality is more like an estimation that you have to constantly adapt in order to achieve better results, and these results are always bound to the circumstances of your day. That also means that doing 'your best' might not meet your expectations.. hm..

Ok, so maybe the issue is already in the beggining of it: setting expectations, or trying to obtain joy from impermanent sources.
