No.10 - AP Lit Big Questions 1 (Rosie's Paradox)
September 28, 2024•455 words
We had a 15 minute long free write in AP Lit today on one of the "Big Questions" of our choice from those that my class wrote in about 10 minutes (there were about 110 questions...). I thought it was a good brain dump for the day so I will be posting.
Keep in mind that I didn't proofread it or anything its just raw writing...
Question:
Why do we yearn for love?
My answer:
Humans unavoidably interact with other human beings throughout their lives, and we tend to develop and express our feelings and opinions towards others. Not all feelings are always positive ones; however, I believe that we have feelings for others because we care about them. If humans did not care about others, no one would even take their own time and effort to think and love or hate them. Because we are constantly tackling our personal standards for this world and others, we compare ourselves and compare our beliefs to others and their actions.
Throughout the book The Namesake, Gogol and his relationships portray the way how Gogol looked into others as he was seeking for love. Gogol constantly sought for love and the sense of relating from others, and looked for the difference in him and the people he has been in relationships with. First two girlfriends of Gogol emphasize the difference between Gogol and the two girls. Ruth and Maxine come from vehemently different backgrounds than Gogol, where the families are Americans and celebrate American cultures. Moreover, the two girls seemed to be complete without the state of relationship. On the other hand, Gogol continued to seek for the lacking sides of him and attempted to fulfill his complexes through relationships with people who are different from him.
Sense of affection and love stems from the self-love we provide ourselves; I do not think we are able to love healthily without it. I believe that humans yearn for love to fulfill their inner lack of whatever: it could be affection, empathy, dependency, or anything. By having such interactions with others and learning what other people are living through and how different every individual in this world is, we learn how to love ourselves and others more.

I definitely could have written more in the span of 15 minutes, but I also feel like I took my time thinking through the question? I was actually the one to write that question on the question document... I initially chose "What causes us to have feelings for others?" but realized how the topic of my writing was shifting away from that question so I decided to write about why we yearn for love.
It's been a while everyone :D
